�� at the UW World Language Fair

September 18 marked UW's World Language Fair in Denny Hall, organized by the Language Learning Center as part of DawgDaze and designed to celebrate and make students aware of all the languages on offer at the University. Students can begin the study of Latin or Ancient Greek in Autumn, Winter or Summer Quarters. Professors Catherine Connors and Alexander Hollmann were on hand to interest students in Latin and Ancient and Modern Greek. Professor Connors attracted a steady stream of visitors to her game, which challenged students to match up Taylor Swift song titles with their equivalents in Latin. It was amazing to see how successful they were at this, recognizing and using English, Spanish, and French cognates to work out the connections. Professor Hollmann showed students how with a little help with the Greek alphabet and some vocabulary they could read so-called kalos inscriptions ("so-and-so is beautiful") on 5th c. BCE Athenian wine cups. The 3-hour event was packed and showed that UW students are really interested in languages.

Chair's Letter, Autumn 2025

I’d like to begin my first year as chair by acknowledging all of the work done by outgoing chair Deb Kamen. During Deb’s five-year term she has steered us steadily and wisely through many challenges and our department has only continued to grow in recognition, excellence, and openness to new approaches and areas of study. I’m grateful to her for leaving such a legacy and look forward to serving the Department and University as we meet new challenges ahead.

Congratulations to our graduates of 2025, with whose families we celebrated in style, sharing good food and taking photographs in our special booth with beautiful accessories (Zeus beards, Athena helmets, Hades hair etc.) crafted by our administrator, Emily Warren! We are proud that graduate students Lauryn Hanley and Laura Harris both received prestigious awards for 2025-2026 which will enable them to work toward completing their dissertations. Our array of scholarships for undergraduate support received a very special addition in the form of a scholarship in honor of beloved emeritus Professor Larry Bliquez, who can still be found in his office most mornings working on his research. The donors are alumnx Laura Matz and Trevor Peterson, longstanding supporters of the Department and of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) Puget Sound chapter. We are sad to report that this past year we lost a great friend of the Department and supporter of the AIA, Dr Thomas Morgan.

Graduate students and faculty from UW �� as well as graduates of the program formed a significant bloc of presenters at the annual conference of the Society for Classical Studies / Archaeological Institute of America, held in Philadelphia in January 2025. There was also a strong UW �� presence at this year’s meeting of the Classical Association of the Pacific Northwest (CAPN), held this year at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C.

Our faculty’s research continues to advance knowledge of the ancient Mediterranean world and to attract attention. Sarah Levin-Richardson was interviewed on the podcast Betwixt the Sheets about sex workers in ancient �� culture—give it a listen! Jim Clauss, Alex Hollmann, and 2002 PhD graduate Chris Chinn all published chapters in A Companion to Apollonius Rhodes (ed. Ruth Scodel). Articles and book chapters by Olga Levaniouk, Deb Kamen, Catherine Connors, Kathryn Topper ,and Chris Waldo also appeared last year. Alex Hollmann together with co-author Robert Daniel of the University of Cologne published Magica Levantina, a long-awaited collection of late-antique curse tablets in ancient Greek from Antioch and Caesarea. Emeritx Alain Gowing and Stephen Hinds also continue to publish regularly.

We look forward to an exciting series of talks by visiting speakers, beginning in October with this year’s Harmon lecturer and graduate of the Department, Tyler Lansford. All are welcome to attend: if you can’t be there in person, we generally livestream via Zoom. Graduate students Lauryn Hanley and Laura Harris win prestigious fellowships

We are proud to announce that two of our graduate students have won prestigious dissertation fellowships for the 2025-26 academic year.

Lauryn Hanley has received a grant from the Fulbright Program which she will use to study in Greece during Winter and Spring Quarters. Lauryn will continue her work on her dissertation on caves in ancient Greek religion, literature and society.

Laura Harris has been awarded the biannual Alvord Endowed Fellowship in the Humanities from the University of Washington College of Arts & Sciences. She will use this generous fellowship to complete her dissertation on asexuality in Latin poetry.

Prof. Deb Kamen’s five-year term chairing the department has come to an end. As of July 1, 2025, Prof. Alex Hollmann will be serving as chair.

A word from Deb:

I am delighted to be handing over the reins to Alex, who brings with him many years of experience as a stellar teacher and scholar in our department and as Chair of Hellenic Studies in the Jackson School of International Studies. I am confident that he will lead the department with foresight and care in the five years to come!

Announcing the Lawrence Bliquez Endowed Student Support Fund

The �� is delighted to announce the establishment of the Lawrence Bliquez Endowed Student Support Fund for ��, a gift of Laura Matz and Trevor Peterson. This fund is designed to provide broad-based support for undergraduate students in the ��, helping to cover educational expenses, research, travel costs, and study abroad.

An alumna of UW, Laura Matz wanted to honor her former first-year Greek teacher with a fund that would support future students. As she says, “On day one he warned us that Ancient Greek was demanding, and boy was he right! Still, he never expected more from his students than he gave. Every single day he showed up with his vast knowledge, love of the ��, enthusiasm and wonderful sense of humor. I am honored to be able to acknowledge his impact on so many students’ lives. Professor Bliquez made my life better. My education at the University of Washington made my life better.”

The winner of a UW Distinguished Teaching Award (1998), Prof. Emeritus Larry Bliquez is the author of �� Surgical Instruments and Other Minor Objects in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (1994) and The Tools of Asclepius: Surgical Instruments in Greek and �� Times (2015), as well as many articles.

UW faculty and alumnus contribute to A Companion to Apollonius of Rhodes

A Companion to Apollonius of Rhodes, edited by Ruth Scodel, was recently published by the University of Michigan Press (2025). The companion contains 20 essays by well-known scholars of Greek and Latin literature, including two UW �� faculty -- Jim Clauss ("'With No Direction Home': Medea and Jason") and Alex Hollmann ("Magic in Apollonius' Argonautica") -- and a 2002 graduate of our PhD program, and currently Professor and Chair in the �� at Pomona College, Chris Chinn ("Apollonius' Argonautica in Silvius’ Silvae"). About the book, Damien Nelis (University of Geneva) states: “This is a volume of high quality and all the contributions have thought-provoking, relevant, and timely things to say. It will fill a gap in existing literature and will be useful for those teaching courses on myth and ancient epic, as well as for scholars working on the Argonautica and on Hellenistic poetry more generally.”
