In Search of a Global Antiquity (sponsored by UW History)

Dr. Nore帽a sketches the contours of the 鈥渘ew鈥 global antiquity and argues that this rapidly emerging field can and should be fully global in its coverage and institutional organization. He will situate the global antiquity field in the current moment, with reference both to contemporary political concerns and to archaeological discovery. Following a defense of the term 鈥済lobal鈥 as a useful frame for ancient world(s) studies, Nore帽a will explore how we might bring both Africa and the Americas into an agenda for a global antiquity that has been limited, for the most part, to Eurasia. He will then turn to the main challenges for this field, both epistemological and practical, before concluding with the proposition that the benefits of global antiquity as an academic endeavor outweigh its costs.
