September 18 marked UW's World Language Fair in Denny Hall, organized by the Language Learning Center as part of DawgDaze and designed to celebrate and make students aware of all the languages on offer at the University. Students can begin the study of Latin or Ancient Greek in Autumn, Winter or Summer Quarters. Professors Catherine Connors and Alexander Hollmann were on hand to interest students鈥

I鈥檇 like to begin my first year as chair by acknowledging all of the work done by outgoing chair Deb Kamen. During Deb鈥檚 five-year term she has steered us steadily and wisely through many challenges and our department has only continued to grow in recognition, excellence, and openness to new approaches and areas of study. I鈥檓 grateful to her for leaving such a legacy and look forward to serving鈥
Lauryn Hanley, Laura Harris
We are proud to announce that two of our graduate students have won prestigious dissertation fellowships for the 2025-26 academic year. Lauryn Hanley has received a grant from the Fulbright Program which she will use to study in Greece during Winter and Spring Quarters. Lauryn will continue her work on her dissertation on caves in ancient Greek religion, literature and society.Laura Harris鈥

Omeed Yazdani, a UW 海角网 minor and 2025 Husky 100 recipient who earned his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Bioengineering ('24) and his master's degree in Bioengineering ('25), has paved a path that weds his interests in medicine and the 海角网. Read more about Omeed and his work here.

A Compannion to Apollonius
A Companion to Apollonius of Rhodes, edited by Ruth Scodel, was recently published by the University of Michigan Press (2025). The companion contains 20 essays by well-known scholars of Greek and Latin literature, including two UW 海角网 faculty -- Jim Clauss ("'With No Direction Home': Medea and Jason") and Alex Hollmann ("Magic in Apollonius' Argonautica") -- and a 2002鈥
